Builders in Hurstpierpoint
Extensions, garages and refurbishment in and around Hurstpierpoint, including conservation-area work on the older High Street properties.
Hurstpierpoint has kept a proper working High Street, and a village centre of period cottages, shopfronts and older houses that runs into twentieth century development at either end. The two need quite different things from a builder.
The village centre
Parts of the High Street and the older core are a conservation area, and there are listed buildings through it. In a conservation area permitted development rights are restricted, so external alterations that would need no application a mile away will need one here.
The buildings themselves are mostly solid-walled and want lime rather than cement. Where we are asked to sort out damp in an old cottage in the village, the cause is far more often hard pointing, a cement render or a raised ground level than anything rising up the wall. That is restoration work, and putting the right material back is most of the fix.
Away from the centre
The newer housing around the village takes the usual work, and plots here are often generous: rear extensions, loft conversions, refitted kitchens and bathrooms and replacement windows and doors.
Garages and outbuildings
We build a good number of these around Hurstpierpoint, where gardens tend to be big enough that putting up a separate building beats extending the house. Detached garages and garden rooms often fall under permitted development, but siting is what decides it: distance to the boundary and whether the building sits forward of the principal elevation both matter more than the floor area. See new builds.
Planning
Mid Sussex District Council, same as Haywards Heath and Burgess Hill. Hurstpierpoint sits just north of the South Downs National Park boundary, so the village itself is normally outside it, but it is worth confirming your own address rather than assuming.

Straight answers
Working in Hurstpierpoint
Do you build garages and outbuildings?
Yes, and a good number of them around here. Detached garages often fall under permitted development, but siting is the thing that catches people out. Distance to the boundary, and whether it sits forward of the principal elevation, matter more than the size does.
Is planning stricter on the older High Street properties?
It can be. Parts of the village are a conservation area, which restricts permitted development rights and means most external alterations need an application. Worth confirming your specific address with Mid Sussex District Council before you plan around it.
