Builders in Albourne

Extensions and refurbishment in Albourne and the countryside around it, including older houses built in stages and properties off mains drainage.

Albourne is small, rural and spread out: a village of older cottages and farmhouses, twentieth century houses along the lanes, and larger properties set in their own grounds. It sits just west of Hurstpierpoint, and a lot of the work here happens alongside the house as much as attached to it.

Extensions and refurbishment

Most of the housing takes the usual work, often on generous plots: rear extensions, loft conversions, refitted kitchens and bathrooms and replacement windows and doors.

Houses built in stages

A lot of the older houses around Albourne have been added to over the centuries: a cottage with a Victorian wing, a farmhouse with a 1970s kitchen on the back, a single-storey lean-to that has been rebuilt twice. Each phase tends to have its own brick, its own roof pitch and its own floor level.

Adding to a house like that well is mostly about tying in. Matching the brick and the tile, picking up the existing roof lines rather than fighting them, and sorting out the steps between old floor levels instead of adding another one. It is also about being straight with you about what we might find when we open up, where one phase meets another. Older properties often need some of the earlier work putting right as part of the new job, and we would rather say so at survey. See refurbishment and restoration.

Off-mains drainage

Some of the more rural properties around the village are not on mains drainage, and run on a septic tank or a treatment plant instead. That matters if your plans include an extra bathroom, an annexe or a bigger household. The system has to cope with the extra load, and older septic tanks that discharge straight to a ditch or stream have to meet current rules. We check what you have at survey, so it is part of the plan and the price rather than a surprise halfway through.

Planning

Mid Sussex District Council, same as Haywards Heath and Hurstpierpoint. The village sits just north of the South Downs National Park boundary, so it is normally outside it, but it is worth confirming your own address rather than assuming.

Straight answers

Working in Albourne

My house is not on mains drainage. Does that affect an extension?

It can, if the work adds a bathroom or more people to the house. A septic tank or treatment plant has to cope with the extra load, and older tanks that discharge to a ditch or stream have to meet current rules. We look at what you have at survey so it is in the plan and the price from the start.

Is Albourne in the South Downs National Park?

The village sits just north of the National Park boundary, so it is normally outside it. It is still worth confirming your specific address with Mid Sussex District Council before you plan around it.
